Intro to Double Knitting

P1010027P1000996Double knitting is a technique of knitting two layers of fabric simultaneously. You can knit a lining as you go, or create a pocket or knit a seamless hat back and forth. Once you grasp the basic technique, you can begin to knit with colors, creating reverse images on either side of the finished piece. In this class, we’ll start with one color and then add a second color so you can see how the reverse imaging happens. (If there is time, you may start a reversible scarf.)

1 2hr session

Intermediate Double Knitting

So far, you may have made a double-knit washcloth or a 2-color reversible swatch. Perhaps you’ve started on a scarf or some other flat object. What if you wanted to do something more complex — say, a hat? Double knitting in the round is exciting, and there are a couple of ways to do it. The finished garment is extra-warm from the two layers, and reversible to boot. At the end of the first session, you should be comfortable with double knitting in the round, and have a plan for continuing your personalized hat. Some motifs will be provided for your use, or you can bring your favorite 2-color patterns. During the second session, we’ll learn to decrease and finish off the hat!*

Requirements: 2 contrasting colors of “normal” (non-textured) yarn and 5 double-point needles or 1 16″ circular.

* Prerequisite: You should be comfortable with the long-tail cast-on, the knit stitch, the purl stitch, as well as working in the round and basic charting. Previous double-knitting experience required — you should either have taken my previous class or have done some other double-knitting colorwork on your own or in another class.
